Lightweight, strength, low environmental impact.

Magnesium alloys are currently in increasing demand. It’s a material with high potential to be used in various industries. We propose various features and advantages, and UPT's technology for them.

Wondering if there are...

challenges of magnesium

Magnesium Features

①Lightest metal elements
The specific gravity of magnesium is 1.7, making it the lightest material among practical metals. In comparison, aluminum has a specific gravity of 2.7, titanium 4.5, zinc 7.1, and iron 7.9.

②Exellent specific strength and specific stiffness
The specific strength (strength/density) and specific stiffness (stiffness/density) of magnesium are higher than those of aluminum, iron, and resin materials.

Excellent dent resistance
In comparison to aluminum and iron, magnesium produces smaller dents or indentations when an object collides with it.

High vibration absorption
Magnesium exhibits excellent vibration absorption properties. The performance may vary depending on the alloy composition, with higher purity magnesium demonstrating superior capabilities in this regard.

⑤Minimaldimentionalchangesduetotemperatureandtime
Magnesium undergoes minimal dimensional changes even when subjected to heating at 150°C for 100 hours, with a variation of 6×10-6. It experiences almost negligible changes at temperatures below 100°C.

⑥Lowenvironmental impact
Magnesium dissolves in saltwater, hot water, and dilute acids.

⑦High thermal conductivity
While it is inferior to aluminum, magnesium possesses superior thermal conductivity compared to plastic.

Weakness of Magnesium

①Safeness
Magnesium is combustible. Especially in the form of fine chips or shavings, it can easily ignite and become a cause of fire.

Corrosionresistance
Due to its high tendency for ionization, magnesium is a metal that is prone to corrosion. Therefore, surface treatments aimed at corrosion prevention are necessary.

Difficult to process
General magnesium materials have a high work hardening rate and excellent resistance to dents, but they are also prone to cracking and are difficult to process through techniques such as pressing and forging.

UPT offers

①Safeness
Using Etching for processing is free from the concern of fire and is safe.

②Corrosion resistance
UPT offers a comprehensive serivice from photo-etching processing to surface treatment, relieving customers from their workload.

③Difficult to process
UPT's network provides support for selecting the optimal materials and helps fulfill customers requirement s.

UPT handles everything from "material sourcing" to "surface treatment" as a single package

Optimal Material Selection

Due to our business relationships with various material manufacturers, we can propose flame-resistant magnesium alloys (AZX series/AMZ series) for customers concerned about the safety of magnesium. For customers with concerns about machinability, we can offer ZA series magnesium alloys (under development) suitable for deep drawing processing.

Flame-resistant Magnesium Alloys

Processing

We can safely and accurately finish the processing of magnesium alloys, which are known as difficult-to-machine materials.

Surface Treatment

We are capable of providing various surface treatments such as anti-reflection coating (black treatment), high corrosion resistance, low resistance (low noise), and brightening treatment.
